Is there a total rollover in hardness testing? The problem may not be on the device at all
2026-09-22
Having been in the industry for many years, we have come into contact with a large number of factory and laboratory clients and have discovered an interesting phenomenon:
Using the same equipment, standards, and materials, some companies have stable testing data and have passed multiple audits; Some companies frequently deviate, receive customer complaints, and have failed audits.
What exactly is the difference? Today, without discussing general techniques, if you look at three real customer rectification cases, you will find that the problem often lies not in the equipment, but outside of it.

01 Auto parts factory: Vickers hardness data fluctuates greatly, audit failed
Customer issue: The hardness of thin sheet parts fluctuates rapidly, and there is a large gap in third-party retesting, resulting in audit being stuck.
Investigation result: It is not an equipment issue, but rather an uneven placement of the sample - the bottom surface is not ground flat and there are small overhangs.
Many people only focus on the surface and overlook the flatness of the sample's bottom surface. Micro suspension can cause force displacement, indentation deformation, and direct data failure.
LABTT solution: Replace the specialized fixture for adapting thin films and standardize the polishing standards for sample preparation bottom surfaces.
Rectification result: The data was stable in one go and passed the audit smoothly.

02 Mold Factory: Long term low Rockwell hardness, batch return
Customer issue: The hardness of the quenched mold steel was found to be low during testing, and the customer determined that the heat treatment did not meet the standards. The entire batch was returned.
Real reason: excessive polishing. The surface hard layer has been polished and worn, and the true hardening hardness cannot be detected.
Many companies, in order to pursue a mirror effect, repeatedly polish and polish, directly thinning the effective hardening layer, resulting in severe distortion of testing data.
LABTT solution: Re optimize the polishing process, control the polishing amount, and retain the effective hardened layer.
Rectification result: The data has been restored to its true level, and the issue of returns has been resolved.
03 Laboratory: The equipment is brand new, but the readings continue to exceed the tolerance
Customer issue: The initial calibration of the newly purchased hardness tester is normal, but it continues to drift after a period of use.
Final cause: The workbench has not been cleaned for a long time, small debris has stepped on it, and there is slight vibration in the equipment.
Precision testing instruments are most afraid of "tiny impurities that are invisible to the naked eye" - which can affect accuracy and cause data deviation.
LABTT Plan: Establish a daily cleaning system for workbenches, conduct environmental vibration inspections, and establish regular calibration plans.
Rectification result: The displayed value has returned to stability, and subsequent retesting and review have been normal.

Three cases, in the same sentence: The problem is not with the equipment, but with the system
In three cases, the equipment was not damaged and the standards were correct, but the reasons for the overturning were different:
One is non-standard sample preparation (uneven bottom surface, excessive polishing), two is incompatible fixtures, and three is out of control environment and maintenance.
The conclusion is straightforward: compliance testing relies on a complete system, not a single device.
Standardized operations, standardized sample preparation, environmental control, and regular calibration are the core of auditing.
